When to Use System v/s Local Configuration?

Overview

With the introduction of System Objects and Sites, configuration will performed at the Site level instead of on each individual Graphiant Edge.

(For information on System Objects, click here.  For information on Site Management, click here.

Graphiant is moving towards all configuration being performed at the Site level.

However with some configurations currently still performed on the Edge directly, there are multiple places where configuration can be performed;  whether it be at the Site level, the Edge level, or both.

This guide will explain where to go to configure each feature.

What is configured at the Site Level with System Objects?

New System Services

The ability to configure new System Services now resides at the Site level in System Objects.

These include:

To access System Objects System Services:

  • Click 'Configure' in the left side menu

  • Select 'System Objects'

  • Choose 'System Services' tab at the top

For instructions on how to configure these System Services, click the links above.

New LAN Segments

New LAN segments are also configured in System Objects, as they continue to be available on all devices once created.

With System Objects, there is now a centralized place to create and manage LAN segments.

To access System Objects LAN Segments:

  • Click 'Configure' in the left side menu

  • Select 'System Objects'

  • Choose 'LAN Segments' tab at the top

For instructions on how to configure LAN segments, click here.

Note:

All LAN segments are available in BOTH System level configuration & Local level configuration

What is Configured at the Edge Level under Local Configuration?

Any Edge device that has been previously configured directly will be in a state of Local Configuration.  These devices will have legacy configurations and will be able to be maintained and further configured in that Local Configuration.

Local Configuration is only applicable to the Edge because it was configured directly on the Edge.

Local Configuration is not tracked at the Site level, as it is not coming from the Site and there are no System Objects involved.

Legacy Configurations of Syslog Servers and IPFIX Collectors

Local legacy configurations of Syslog and IPFIX are still found in the Edge's configuration, and can be edited there.

Note:

System Services SNMP Servers are only available in System Objects; there is no Local Configuration of SNMP.

To access the Local configuration of Syslog Servers and IPFIX Collectors:

  • Click 'Configure' in the left side menu

  • Select 'Edge Devices'

  • Select the Edge in which to find the local configuration;  click 'Configure'

  • Click 'Configure Services' on the left

  • Select 'Edge Services'

  • Choose either 'Syslog' or 'IPFIX' tab at the top.

The "Local Configuration" section will be found below the "Global Object" section.

Any field in the local configuration for either a Syslog Server or an IPFIX Collector will be able to be edited here.  For details on configuring local Syslog or IPFIX, click here.
